Description

The weekend revolved around Cornwall’s creative heritage, linking art, literature and environment.  Graham focused on artists and writers connected to the area, including the "Newlyn School" (see slide 'Summer in February' based on the Lamorna artists' colony, Cornwall), the St. Ives School, D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, Dylan Thomas, Laura Knight, Virginia Woolf, Sven Berlin, Ben Nicholson, George Barker, Patrick Heron & Jack Clemo. On Saturday we visited Penlee House Gallery and saw the paintings Graham Sutherland produced at Geevor Tin Mine over 70 years ago - From Darkness into Light. Having spent the day at Tate St Ives and The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, we moved on in the early evening to The Ship, Mousehole (a favourite haunt of Dylan Thomas & Caitlin) for more poetry and to discuss the days' impressions. On Sunday morning Adam Kerr, artist & grandson of painter Lamorna Birch gave a memorable talk exploring his grandfather's creative circle.

Painting Workshops

Artist David Bachmann guided painters during two days of workshops, using landscape and Penzance’s remarkable light, sea and sky as sources of inspiration.
